Here’s how to find community events, classes and groups in Slough and nearby, and how to get involved.

Where community life happens in Slough

Many local events and groups meet in the same familiar places:

  • Parks and green spaces such as Salt Hill Park, Upton Court Park and Herschel Park host outdoor fitness, walking groups, picnics and summer events. Black Park and the Jubilee River are close by for longer walks and runs.
  • The Curve in the town centre, home to the main library, runs talks, activities and events for children and adults.
  • Community centres, church halls, gurdwaras, mosques and temples across Slough host classes, clubs, lunches and celebrations, and many welcome everyone.
  • Schools and sports centres are often used in the evenings and at weekends for sports clubs, classes and fitness sessions.

Venues change what’s on regularly, so check their websites or noticeboards for the latest details.

Part 1: Finding things to do

1. Start with what you enjoy

Think about what you’d like to get out of it: getting fitter, meeting new people, learning a skill, practising a language or finding activities for the children. Then browse community listings and filter by category or area.

2. Read the details carefully

A good event or class listing should tell you:

  • the date, time and how often it runs
  • where it is, and whether there’s parking or step-free access
  • the cost, if any, and how to pay
  • who it’s for, such as beginners, families, women only or over-50s
  • what to bring or wear
  • whether you need to book

If something isn’t clear, message the organiser on Benta before you go.

3. Try it once

Many classes and groups offer a free or cheap first session. Going once is the easiest way to find out whether it’s right for you. If you’re nervous about going alone, ask a friend or neighbour to come along.

4. Stay safe

  • Choose events in public or well-known venues, especially the first time you meet a new group.
  • Be cautious about paying large amounts upfront to someone you don’t know. For ticketed events, check the organiser is genuine.
  • For children’s activities, ask the organiser about their safeguarding policy and whether staff have DBS checks.
  • Keep your chat on Benta until you’re happy the organiser is genuine.

5. Lift sharing

Sharing a lift to work, college or an event saves money and cuts traffic. Agree the pick-up point, times and how costs will be shared before the journey. Sharing the cost of fuel is generally fine, but drivers who charge more than that may need a licence and different insurance. Tell someone where you’re going, and trust your instincts.

6. Lost and found

If you’ve lost something, post a Lost and found ad with a clear description, the area and when you lost it, but keep back one detail only the real owner would know. If you find a dog, report it to Slough Borough Council’s dog warden service. Most dogs are microchipped, so a vet can also scan it for free.

Part 2: Starting or running a group

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Start it yourself. Many of the best local groups began with one person and a simple ad.

  • Keep it simple: pick a regular day, time and place so people can plan around it.
  • Choose an easy venue: a park, café or community hall that’s easy to find and reach by bus.
  • Be clear about cost: if you charge, say how much and what it covers, such as room hire or materials.
  • Make people welcome: say who the group is for and that beginners are welcome.
  • Think about safety: if you run activities for children, follow safeguarding guidance. For physical activities, check whether you need insurance.
