Free stuff in Slough: how to give away and find free items locally

Clear space, cut waste and help a neighbour. How to give things away for free in Slough, how to get free items, and how to spot free stuff scams.

Got something you no longer need that still has plenty of life in it? Giving it away is often the quickest way to clear space, and it helps a neighbour and keeps good things out of landfill. Looking for something? The Free stuff category can save you a lot of money. Here’s how giving and getting free stuff works in Slough and nearby.

Why give things away?

  • It’s fast: free items are usually collected within a day or two.
  • No haggling: no negotiating, no payments and no worries about fake bank transfers.
  • Less waste: furniture, toys and clothes get used again instead of going to the tip.
  • It saves you a trip: someone collects from you, so you don’t need to take it to the recycling centre or pay for a bulky waste collection.
  • It helps people nearby: students, families setting up a new home and people on a tight budget often look here first.

What gets snapped up

Part 1: Giving things away

1. Make sure it’s worth giving

Free doesn’t mean broken. Give away things that are clean, safe and still usable. If something is broken, damaged or unsafe, recycle it instead. Say clearly if an item needs a small repair, so people know what they’re getting.

2. Some things can’t be listed

The same rules apply to free items as to items for sale. You can’t give away anything illegal, stolen, counterfeit or recalled, medicines, alcohol, tobacco or vapes, weapons, or live animals. If you’re giving away baby equipment, read our tips on baby and kids items first, especially for car seats and cot mattresses.

3. Write a clear ad

  • what it is, with measurements for furniture
  • its condition, including any marks or faults
  • your area, for example Langley or Upton (your exact address stays private)
  • when it can be collected, and whether it needs two people or a van

Add a couple of clear photos. Items with photos are collected much faster.

4. Decide who gets it

Free items often get lots of messages. Choose a simple, fair approach and stick to it, such as first to confirm a collection time, and say so in your ad. Reply to the others to let them know it’s gone. Once it has been collected, delete the ad from My ads, so people stop messaging you.

5. Stay safe at collection

  • Keep your chat on Benta until you’ve arranged a time.
  • If you can, leave smaller items on the doorstep or in the front garden for collection.
  • Have someone else at home when people collect larger items.
  • Be wary if someone asks for your bank details, a “delivery fee” or a code sent to your phone. You don’t need to share any of these to give something away.

Part 2: Getting free stuff

1. Be quick and polite

Good free items go fast. Check Free stuff in Slough regularly. When you message, say when you can collect and confirm you can transport it. A friendly, clear message is much more likely to get a reply.

2. Turn up when you say you will

If your plans change, tell the giver straight away, so they can offer it to someone else. Don’t leave anyone waiting at home for a no-show.

3. Bring what you need

Bring a big enough vehicle, someone to help lift, and any tools you need to take things apart. Collect everything you agreed to take.

4. Check it before you take it

Have a quick look at the item before you load it up. If it’s not what you expected, it’s fine to politely say no thanks. For electricals, test them at home before use. For anything for babies or children, check it’s safe and hasn’t been recalled.

5. Don’t take free things to resell

People give things away to help someone who needs them. Asking for free items just to sell them on isn’t in the spirit of Free stuff, and it puts people off giving.

Spot the scams

Occasionally scammers post “free” items to get people’s details or money. Be careful if:

  • a “free” item needs a delivery fee, deposit or payment for “insurance”
  • the person asks for your phone number, email, bank details or a verification code
  • the offer is for something very expensive, such as a new phone or a puppy
