10 ways to buy and sell safely in your local area
Most local deals go smoothly. These ten simple habits help you spot scams, stay safe when you meet, and make sure you get paid.

Buying and selling locally is quick and friendly, and most deals go without a hitch. A few simple habits make it even safer, whether you’re buying a sofa, selling a car or renting a room.
If you’re buying
- See it before you pay. Inspect items, view rooms and test-drive vehicles in person. Genuine sellers are happy to show you.
- Be wary of prices that look too good. A bargain far below similar listings is a common sign of a scam.
- Keep the chat on Benta. Be careful if someone pushes you to move to WhatsApp or email straight away, or says they’re abroad and will post the item.
- Pay in a traceable way. Avoid paying by bank transfer to someone you haven’t met. For larger amounts, pay only once you’ve checked everything.
- Check vehicles properly. Look up the MOT history on GOV.UK, check the V5C logbook matches the seller, and consider a history check for outstanding finance or write-offs.
If you’re selling
- Make sure the money has arrived in your account before you hand anything over. Payment “confirmation” emails can be faked.
- Watch out for overpayment. If a buyer “accidentally” sends too much and asks for a refund of the difference, it’s almost always a scam.
- Keep your details private. Don’t share bank details, copies of ID or your home address until you’re ready to complete the deal.
When you meet
- Meet somewhere busy in daylight for small items, and bring a friend for big ones. For collections from home, have someone with you and let a friend know where you’ll be.
- Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, walk away. There will be other deals.
