From cleaners and plumbers to tutors and a man with a van: how to find, check and pay local services in Slough, and how to get more customers if you offer one.

Need a cleaner, a plumber, a man with a van or a maths tutor? Some of the best help is right on your doorstep. Hiring locally often means quicker visits, fairer prices and someone who knows the area. Here’s how to find and hire trusted local services in Slough, and how to get more customers if you offer a service yourself.

Popular local services in Slough

Part 1: Hiring a local service

1. Be clear about what you need

Before you contact anyone, write down the job: what needs doing, where, how big it is and when you need it done. Add photos if it helps, such as the leaking tap, the room to paint or the furniture to move. The clearer you are, the more accurate the quotes will be.

2. Get more than one quote

For bigger jobs, ask two or three people. Ask for a written quote that shows the price, what’s included, materials, how long it will take and when payment is due. A quote is usually a fixed price. An estimate is only a guide, and the final bill can be higher.

3. Check they’re the right person for the job

  • Look at their work. Ask for photos of past jobs or references from recent customers.
  • Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. You can check their ID card and look them up on the Gas Safe Register.
  • Electrical work: for bigger jobs such as rewiring or a new circuit, use an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, so the work is certified.
  • Rubbish removal: anyone taking your waste away should have a waste carrier registration. If your rubbish is fly-tipped, you could be fined, so check the Environment Agency’s public register.
  • Childcare: childminders in England usually need to be registered with Ofsted. Ask to see their registration and their DBS check.
  • Tutors who work with children should be happy to show a recent DBS check and references.
  • Insurance: for trades, removals and cleaning, ask whether they have public liability insurance in case something gets damaged.

4. Agree the details in writing

Before work starts, confirm the price, the start date, what’s included and how you’ll pay, even if it’s just in your Benta messages. If plans change, agree the new price before the extra work is done.

5. Pay safely

  • Avoid paying the full amount upfront. For bigger jobs, a small deposit for materials is normal, with the rest paid when the work is finished.
  • Pay by bank transfer or card where you can, and keep a record.
  • Be wary of anyone who knocks on your door saying urgent work is needed, or who pressures you to decide on the spot.
  • Keep your chat on Benta until you’re happy the person is genuine.

Part 2: Offering your services on Benta

Whether you’re a cleaner, a tutor, a decorator or run a small business, Benta is a free way to reach customers in Slough and nearby.

1. Write a clear title

Say what you do and where: “Reliable home cleaner in Langley and Cippenham” or “Man with a van, same-day collections across Slough” works better than “Services available”.

2. Tell people what to expect

  • exactly what you offer, and what you don’t
  • your prices, or a starting price such as “from £20 an hour”
  • the areas you cover
  • when you’re available, including evenings or weekends
  • relevant qualifications, registrations, insurance and DBS checks

3. Show your work

Add real photos of jobs you’ve done, such as a freshly painted room, a tidy garden or a cake you made for an event. Benta allows up to 4 photos, and the first one is your cover photo.

4. Reply quickly and keep promises

Customers often message a few people at once, and the first helpful reply usually wins the job. Turn up when you say you will, keep the customer updated, and ask happy customers to recommend you to their neighbours.

5. Get the basics right

If you work for yourself, you may need to register as self-employed with HMRC. Check GOV.UK for the rules. Make sure you have the right insurance and any licences or registrations your work needs.
