How to sell your furniture in Slough: a practical guide

Moving or making space? How to price, photograph, list and hand over your old furniture locally in Slough, plus what to do if it doesn’t sell.

Moving house, downsizing or just making space? Selling your old furniture locally is one of the quickest ways to free up room and make some money, and it keeps good furniture out of landfill. Here’s how to sell furniture in Slough and nearby, from pricing and photos to getting it out of the door.

1. Work out what’s worth selling

Solid wood tables, chests of drawers, wardrobes, bookcases, desks, garden furniture and well-known flat-pack brands in good condition tend to sell well. Sofas and armchairs sell too, especially if they’re clean and from a smoke-free, pet-free home. Items with broken frames, deep stains or strong smells are much harder to sell, so be realistic.

Many buyers in the area are setting up rooms and shared houses, so practical pieces such as beds, wardrobes, desks, chairs and small tables are always in demand.

2. Clean it and fix the small things

  • Wipe down surfaces, vacuum cushions and remove anything stored inside drawers.
  • Tighten loose screws and handles. Ten minutes with a screwdriver can add pounds to the price.
  • Find any spare parts, keys or assembly instructions and keep them with the item.

3. Take photos that sell

  • Shoot in daylight, with the item in a clear space against a plain wall if you can.
  • Take the whole piece from the front and at an angle, then close-ups of the material, any labels and any marks or damage.
  • Open drawers and doors in one photo so buyers can see the inside.
  • Use real photos of your own item. Benta allows up to 4, and the first is your cover photo.

4. Measure everything

The question buyers ask most is “will it fit?”. Add the height, width and depth to your description, and for beds and sofas the seat or mattress size. If it doesn’t come apart, mention it. Buyers need to know if it will go through their door or up their stairs.

5. Price it fairly

Look at similar items for sale locally and online, then price yours honestly for its age and condition. As a rough guide, good second-hand furniture often sells for somewhere between a third and a half of its price new, and less for flat-pack or older pieces. Price it a little above the lowest amount you’d accept if you’re happy to negotiate. If you just want it gone quickly, list it in Free stuff and it will usually be collected within days.

6. Write a clear ad

A good title includes what it is, the material or brand, and a key detail: “Solid oak dining table with 4 chairs, seats 6” beats “Table for sale”. In the description, include:

  • size and measurements
  • condition, including any faults
  • whether it’s assembled, and whether it can be taken apart
  • collection only, or whether you can help with delivery
  • your area, for example Langley or Cippenham (your exact address stays private)

7. Plan the collection

Most furniture sales are “buyer collects”, so agree the details before the day:

  • Check the buyer has the right vehicle and enough people to lift it.
  • If something needs taking apart, do it beforehand or agree who will.
  • Clear a path to the door and protect walls and door frames.
  • If the buyer doesn’t have transport, local man with a van and removals services on Benta can help.

8. Stay safe and get paid

  • Keep your chat on Benta until the collection is arranged.
  • Have someone else at home when the buyer collects, and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Take cash on collection, or make sure a bank transfer has actually arrived in your account before anything is loaded. Payment “confirmation” emails and screenshots can be faked.
  • Be wary of anyone who offers to pay more than your price and asks for the difference back.

9. If it doesn’t sell

  • Lower the price or repost the ad. Ads on Benta stay live for 30 days and can be reposted from My ads.
  • Give it away in the Free stuff category. Someone nearby will often be glad of it.
  • Donate it. Charity furniture shops often collect. Most only accept upholstered furniture with its fire safety label still attached, so check before you book.
  • Book a bulky waste collection. Slough Borough Council offers a paid collection service for large household items. Check the council’s website for current prices and how to book.

Selling locally means less waste, less hassle and money in your pocket. Post your furniture on Benta for free and chat with buyers nearby.
